The short answer

The I Speak Portuguese guide helps learners prepare for first introductions to a Brazilian family. This Real Life Portuguese adaptation focuses on a different moment: keeping conversation going when a child is part of the family visit.

Ask relatives about a child's routine

Ask Como foi o dia dele? or Como foi o dia dela? to hear about a boy's or girl's day. If you want a little more detail, ask what the child enjoyed or learned, rather than putting pressure on them to perform in Portuguese.

Como foi o dia da Sofia na escola?

How was Sofia's day at school?

O que vocês fizeram depois do almoço?

What did you all do after lunch?

Qual foi a parte mais divertida?

What was the most fun part?

Share a small story about your child

Use hoje (today), ontem (yesterday), and depois (then) to organize a short story. A simple sequence with two or three actions is easier to follow than a long explanation with unfamiliar vocabulary.

A criança is a child; crianças is plural. In everyday family conversation, you can also say meu filho or minha filha. Keep the subject clear when you switch from the child to another family member.

Hoje ela desenhou um peixe e depois mostrou para a professora.

Today she drew a fish and then showed it to the teacher.

Meu filho aprendeu uma música nova.

My son learned a new song.

Invite a relative to continue the conversation

A follow-up question shows that you are listening. Ask what a relative liked to do at the same age or which family activity the child might enjoy next time.

For a first meeting and introduction phrases, see the related I Speak Portuguese guide. Use this article to practice the next part: sharing ordinary family moments and asking about a child's interests.

Você também gostava de desenhar quando era criança?

Did you also like drawing when you were a child?

O que vocês costumam fazer juntos no fim de semana?

What do you usually do together on the weekend?

Put it into practice

Ask about the child's day, share a short story, and use one follow-up to keep a relaxed family conversation moving.
