Ficar, Sair, Namorar: Talk About Dating in Brazilian Portuguese
Dating words can describe different situations, but a label alone does not tell you what two people expect from a relationship.

The short answer
Solteiro or solteira means single. Namorando often means being in a dating relationship, while ficando com alguém can describe a more casual romantic involvement. These are useful starting points, but speakers may use them differently depending on context and personal preference.
Recognize common ways to describe relationship status
Sair com alguém can mean going out with someone, including a date. The phrase may describe a romantic situation, but it does not automatically establish exclusivity or a formal relationship. Use the surrounding conversation to understand what the speaker means.
Estou solteira no momento.
I’m single at the moment. (speaker: woman)
Ele está ficando com uma pessoa.
He is casually seeing someone.
A gente está namorando.
We are in a dating relationship.
Remember that ficar has several meanings
In a romantic context, ficar with a person can mean casual involvement. In another sentence, ficar may mean to stay, remain, or become: Vou ficar em casa (I’m going to stay home) and Fiquei feliz (I became happy). Do not assume the romantic meaning each time you hear the verb.
This range of meanings is why context matters. Notice who the verb refers to, what words follow it, and what the conversation is about. When you are unsure, ask a short question rather than filling in a meaning based on English alone.
Você quer ficar comigo?
Do you want to be romantically involved with me? (context-dependent)
Vou ficar em casa hoje.
I’m going to stay home today.
Depois da notícia, ela ficou contente.
After the news, she became happy.
Ask about intentions and expectations directly
If the label matters to you, ask what the other person means. O que você está buscando? means “What are you looking for?” A gente está ficando ou namorando? asks whether you are casually seeing each other or in a relationship.
A direct conversation is clearer than guessing from a word or treating relationship labels as mandatory stages. Adjust the question to your comfort level and the relationship. The I Speak Portuguese source lesson explores how these words appear in conversation; this Real Life guide focuses on clear, respectful questions.
O que você está buscando neste momento?
What are you looking for right now?
Você prefere ir com calma?
Would you prefer to take it slowly?
Quero saber como você entende essa situação.
I want to know how you understand this situation.
Practice a short, honest answer
Prepare one sentence about what you want and one question you would feel comfortable asking. For example, you can say that you want to meet someone and take your time. A short, honest answer gives the other person room to respond without forcing a label too early.
Terms such as crush (a person you like) and paquerar (to flirt) may also appear in informal conversation. Meanings shift with tone and context. Hear the words in a complete sentence before trying them yourself, and ask an I Speak Portuguese teacher about regional or social nuances when needed.
Quero conhecer alguém, mas prefiro ir com calma.
I want to meet someone, but I prefer to take it slowly.
Estou gostando de conhecer você.
I’m enjoying getting to know you.
Podemos conversar sobre o que cada um quer?
Can we talk about what each of us wants?
