When Your Brazilian Partner Replies in English: How to Keep Practicing Portuguese

A few gentle prompts can make it easier to continue in Portuguese when your partner is used to speaking English with you.

The short answer

A partner may switch to English because it is quicker, familiar, or kinder when you look confused. If you want another try in Portuguese, ask for one concrete thing: a shorter answer, a slower pace, or a chance to finish your thought.

Make a small, specific request

Choose a low-pressure moment and explain that you are asking for practice, not a test. You can also name a signal—such as “me dá uma dica” (give me a hint)—that means you want help staying in Portuguese.

Você pode responder em português primeiro?

Could you answer in Portuguese first?

Se eu travar, me dá uma dica?

If I get stuck, could you give me a hint?

Give the conversation an easy next step

Before you begin, choose something you can both talk about without preparation: a meal, a show, or what you want to do this weekend. When you cannot find a word, describe it another way instead of waiting for your partner to translate the whole sentence.

If your partner answers in English, repeat one familiar word from the reply and ask a simple follow-up in Portuguese. That gives both of you a bridge back into the exchange without making the switch feel like a correction.

Você falou que o restaurante fica perto?

Did you say the restaurant is nearby?

Como chama aquele prato mesmo?

What is that dish called again?

Use a three-part conversation reset

This short reset helps when you have both fallen back into English. Keep it optional: use it when it is fun and pause when the topic deserves more focus than language practice.

  • Repeat a word or idea you understood: “O restaurante…”
  • Ask one short question in Portuguese: “Fica perto daqui?”
  • If the answer is still hard to follow, ask for a slower version or take a brief break.

Put it into practice

The goal is another comfortable exchange, not a perfect performance. I Speak Portuguese has a separate teacher-led guide to setting up a regular practice routine with your partner.
