Use a sincere expression of sympathy and offer practical support without expecting the person to respond.

The short answer

Sinto muito is a common way to express sympathy. You can name the loss if you know the person is comfortable discussing it, but a short message may be best when you are unsure.

Keep the first message simple

Avoid trying to explain the loss or tell the person how they should feel. A sincere expression of care is enough.

Sinto muito pela sua perda.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Estou pensando em você e na sua família.

I’m thinking of you and your family.

Não sei o que dizer, mas sinto muito.

I don’t know what to say, but I’m so sorry.

Offer a specific kind of help

If you can help, make the offer concrete rather than asking the grieving person to plan the support. Offer to bring food, make a call, or take care of one practical task.

Only offer what you can actually do. A gentle offer gives the other person a choice without creating pressure.

Posso levar alguma coisa para você amanhã?

Can I bring you something tomorrow?

Quer que eu te ligue mais tarde?

Would you like me to call you later?

Se precisar conversar, estou aqui.

If you need to talk, I’m here.

Respect silence and different ways of grieving

The person may not have energy to answer right away. Let them know that they do not need to respond, and check in later if that is appropriate for your relationship.

Expressions of sympathy differ among people, families, and faith traditions. Follow the bereaved person’s lead and avoid assuming that one phrase or ritual suits everyone.

Não precisa responder agora.

You don’t need to reply now.

Vou respeitar seu espaço e estou por perto.

I’ll respect your space, and I’m nearby.

Quando você quiser, pode me chamar.

Whenever you want, you can reach out to me.

Put it into practice

Choose one sincere sympathy phrase and one practical offer that you can keep. Let the other person decide whether they want to respond.
