How to Order Coffee in Brazil: A Practical Portuguese Guide

A simple order gives you a low-pressure chance to use Portuguese at a Brazilian café.

The short answer

At a café or bakery, you can start with “Eu queria…” (I’d like…) or the shorter “Um café, por favor.” Brazilian menus vary, so if you are not sure what a drink includes, ask what comes with it before choosing.

Start with a simple order

Eu queria um café, por favor.

I’d like a coffee, please.

Pode ser um pingado?

Could I have a pingado? (coffee with milk)

Tem leite vegetal?

Do you have plant-based milk?

Ask for details and make a change

Brazilian coffee names and sizes can differ from what you know at home. A quick question helps you find out whether the drink is small, served with milk, or available iced. To change an order politely, say “sem” for without or “com” for with.

Esse café vem com leite?

Does this coffee come with milk?

Pode ser sem açúcar?

Could it be without sugar?

Vocês têm café gelado?

Do you have iced coffee?

Finish the interaction

If the café asks whether you want the order to stay or go, “aqui” means here and “para viagem” means to go. You can ask for the bill with “A conta, por favor,” though in many counter-service bakeries you pay at the register.

  • Para tomar aqui? — For here? Resposta: Aqui, por favor.
  • É para viagem? — Is it to go? Resposta: Sim, para viagem.
  • Aceita cartão? — Do you take cards?

Put it into practice

Try one short exchange at a time. You do not need a perfect accent; a clear order and a friendly “por favor” are enough to get started.
