Ask for Directions in Portuguese: A Flexible Guide for Exploring Copacabana

Memorize a few direction questions you can adapt to a destination, then confirm what you understood.

The short answer

Onde fica…? asks where a place is. Como eu chego a…? asks how to get there. Replace the destination with the street, beach, station, or business you need; you do not have to memorize a separate question for every place in a neighborhood.

Name the place you are trying to find

Com licença, onde fica a estação de metrô?

Excuse me, where is the subway station?

Como eu chego à praia?

How do I get to the beach?

Check walking distance and ask for a visual cue

Dá para ir a pé? asks whether you can walk there. Fica perto daqui? checks if it is nearby. If you lose the spoken directions, ask whether the person can point to the route on a map. These phrases are useful in Copacabana or anywhere else you travel.

Dá para ir a pé daqui?

Can I walk there from here?

Você pode mostrar no mapa?

Could you show me on the map?

É perto ou é melhor pegar um ônibus?

Is it close, or is it better to take a bus?

Repeat the key detail to confirm

After listening, repeat one street name, direction, or transport option as a question: Então, viro à direita na próxima rua? (So, I turn right at the next street?). This gives the other person a chance to correct a detail before you set off. The guide teaches language only; check current local conditions separately when planning a route.

  • Ask for the place: Onde fica…?
  • Check the option: Dá para ir a pé?
  • Confirm one detail: Então, sigo por esta rua?

Put it into practice

The I Speak Portuguese source connects a Copacabana story to travel language. This adaptation focuses on a reusable ask–check–confirm sequence and does not make claims about current routes or conditions.
