From “Vamos Marcar” to a Real Plan: Make Invitations Specific in Portuguese
A warm invitation gets easier to answer when it includes an activity and a possible time.

The short answer
A straightforward invitation can start with Quer tomar um café? (Want to have coffee?) or Vamos almoçar na sexta? (Shall we have lunch on Friday?). Bora is a casual option among friends, while a complete question may feel more comfortable when you are still getting to know someone.
Choose a direct invitation that suits your tone
Quer tomar um café depois da aula?
Want to get coffee after class?
Você topa passear no parque domingo?
Are you up for a walk in the park on Sunday?
Suggest a time without making the answer awkward
Adding a day helps the other person decide. To keep it flexible, offer two choices or make it easy to suggest another time: Pode ser sábado ou domingo — o que fica melhor? (Saturday or Sunday could work—which is better?). A specific option gives the conversation somewhere to go.
Você prefere sábado de manhã ou domingo à tarde?
Do you prefer Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon?
Se não der esta semana, a gente combina outra hora.
If this week doesn’t work, we can find another time.
Treat “vamos marcar” as a starting point
Vamos marcar means something like “let’s plan it” or “we should get together.” Depending on the people and context, it may be a friendly intention rather than a confirmed appointment. If you want to meet, follow it with a proposed day or a message to settle the details; do not assume one phrase carries the same commitment in every conversation.
- Invite: Vamos tomar um café? — Shall we get coffee?
- Propose: Que tal quinta-feira? — How about Thursday?
- Confirm: Então, quinta às quatro? — So, Thursday at four?
