The short answer
Short app lessons can help you build a regular habit and recognize useful vocabulary. To practise speaking, add a step that asks you to retrieve the phrase yourself: close the exercise, describe the situation in English, and say a Portuguese response from memory.
Keep the lesson, then add one spoken response
This guide develops the practice ideas in I Speak Portuguese’s Duolingo review into a short routine you can use after any Portuguese lesson. App features vary, so follow the version you have and focus on what you can say without looking at the answer.
Queria um café, por favor.
I’d like a coffee, please.
Você pode repetir mais devagar?
Could you repeat that more slowly?
Hoje eu vou estudar por dez minutos.
Today I’m going to study for ten minutes.
Use a three-minute practice loop
Choose one expression from the lesson and make it personal. Change the person, place, or time, then say the new sentence aloud. Finally, listen to a Brazilian speaker use a complete phrase and notice the rhythm around the word you studied.
If a prompt already asks you to speak, answer before checking the model. If it is a recognition exercise, add your own spoken answer afterward. The goal is not to repeat a large vocabulary list; it is to prepare one phrase for a real exchange.
Eu estudo português no ônibus.
I study Portuguese on the bus.
Eu pratico depois do trabalho.
I practise after work.
- Recall one phrase without looking.
- Change one detail so the sentence is true for you.
- Listen again and say your sentence at a comfortable pace.
Put it into practice
After an app lesson, add one sentence that you recall and say aloud. The related I Speak Portuguese review looks at how a learning app can fit into a broader study routine.
