Learn Portuguese for Free: A Simple Weekly Practice Plan

A useful no-cost plan combines listening, review, and speaking instead of jumping between a dozen resources in one evening.

The short answer

You can make progress without buying several courses at once. Use a public podcast, video, or library resource for listening; a notebook or free flashcard deck for review; and a language exchange or self-recording prompt for speaking. The key is to choose sources you can return to, not to collect every free link you find.

Pick one free source for each skill

Check whether the material teaches Brazilian Portuguese and whether the audio is clear enough for your current level. Free access can change, and some services limit episodes or features, so have a backup source rather than building your whole study plan around one platform.

Hoje, vou ouvir um vídeo curto em português.

Today, I’m going to listen to a short video in Portuguese.

Anotei cinco expressões novas.

I wrote down five new expressions.

Vou repetir as frases em voz alta.

I’m going to repeat the sentences aloud.

Build a repeatable 20-minute session

Spend the first eight minutes listening for the main idea. Use the next five to check two or three phrases, then spend the final seven saying the expressions aloud or making new sentences. The exact minutes are flexible; the balance between input, review, and active use is what makes the session useful.

If you only have ten minutes, shorten each stage. Consistency is more realistic than planning a two-hour study block that rarely happens. Keep a record of the material and one phrase you want to reuse next time.

Primeiro, eu escuto sem pausar.

First, I listen without pausing.

Depois, eu confiro duas expressões.

Then, I check two expressions.

No final, eu conto o que entendi.

At the end, I say what I understood.

Use free tools to practice speaking, not only reading

A free resource can support speaking even if it does not give individual feedback. Shadow a short phrase, record a one-minute answer, or describe an object in your room. Compare your recording with the source audio for rhythm and missing words, then repeat the task after a few days.

A language exchange can provide conversation, but agree on how you will divide time and correct each other. If you want focused feedback or a structured lesson, a paid teacher may help; the goal of this guide is to show what you can do independently before making that choice.

Na minha cidade, tem muitos parques.

Eu gosto deste podcast porque…

I like this podcast because…

Uma coisa que aprendi hoje foi…

Review one small result every week

At the end of the week, choose one recording, paragraph, or conversation note and notice what feels easier now. Keep expressions you can actually use and remove vocabulary that has no connection to your goals. This creates a small personal curriculum from free material.

The I Speak Portuguese source article surveys free learning resources. This adaptation gives you a weekly structure for using them. For short native audio, explore Real Life Portuguese; when you want a person to correct your sentences, I Speak Portuguese offers teacher-led lessons.

Esta semana, entendi mais palavras no áudio.

This week, I understood more words in the audio.

Quero praticar perguntas na próxima semana.

I want to practice questions next week.

Já consigo falar por um minuto sobre minha rotina.

I can already speak for one minute about my routine.

Put it into practice

Choose one listening source, one notebook or review method, and one speaking prompt. Schedule three short sessions this week, then keep the phrases that helped you say something real.
