How to Review Portuguese Vocabulary with Phrase Cards
A single translation rarely shows how a Portuguese word behaves. Use short phrase cards to review meaning, grammar, and natural usage without building an unmanageable deck.

The short answer
A Portuguese word can change meaning depending on the phrase around it. A card for ficar (to stay, become, or end up, among other uses) does not show which sense you heard. A short example gives you a situation and helps you recall the word as part of a usable expression.
Save useful phrases instead of isolated translations
Choose a sentence that is short enough to remember and meaningful enough to recognize later. Note where it came from so you can return to the speaker or surrounding context if the meaning is unclear.
Vou ficar em casa hoje.
I’m going to stay home today.
Fiquei feliz com a notícia.
I was happy about the news.
Test recall before you reveal the answer
When a card appears, read or listen to the prompt and try to remember the meaning before you flip it. If you use a gap, say the missing word aloud. Give yourself a moment to retrieve the answer; rereading the card is recognition, while trying to recall it is a different task.
Mark the card as difficult when you cannot explain the phrase, not only when you forget an accent mark. You can correct spelling after you understand the meaning and can produce the expression.
Add context and one personal example
Include a short English meaning that matches this sentence, not every possible dictionary definition. If the phrase has a grammar feature that matters, add a compact note—for instance, whether a preposition follows the verb or which person the verb form describes.
Then make one new sentence about your life using the phrase. If you are learning ficar em casa, say when you plan to stay home. A personal sentence gives you another context for recalling the expression.
A gente ficou em casa no domingo.
We stayed home on Sunday.
Vou ficar em casa amanhã para descansar.
I’m going to stay home tomorrow to rest.
Keep the deck small enough to review
Add phrases that answer a real need: something you heard repeatedly, want to say, or confused with another expression. If every new word becomes a card, the growing pile may take more time than you have to review it.
Remove or combine cards that are duplicates, too long, or no longer useful. Your collection should make it easier to recall practical Portuguese, not serve as a record of every word you have ever encountered.
Put it into practice
A good phrase card gives you a context, a clear meaning, and a chance to recall or personalize the expression. Add fewer cards and review them consistently.
