Learn clear phrases for deciding which groceries are shared, adding items to a list, and checking before you use food that belongs to a roommate.

The short answer

A shared refrigerator does not mean every item is communal. Use de todo mundo (everyone's) and de cada um (each person's) to clarify whose groceries are whose. A quick question can prevent a small kitchen misunderstanding.

Find out what everyone considers shared

If you share basics such as oil or coffee, name the item and agree how the household will replace it. Do not assume that a roommate's food is available just because it is in a common space.

O leite é de todo mundo ou cada pessoa compra o seu?

Is the milk for everyone or does each person buy their own?

Posso usar um pouco do seu azeite?

Can I use a little of your olive oil?

Add to a list and label your food

A lista de compras is a shopping list. Ask where the household keeps it and whether roommates prefer a paper note or a message. When you buy something for everyone, say so and mention how you want to split the cost.

Labeling a container with a name or date can make the arrangement easy to understand. Use está separado (it is set aside) if you want to tell a roommate that a food item is not shared.

Vou colocar café e detergente na lista de compras.

I will add coffee and dish soap to the shopping list.

Deixei esta comida separada para o almoço de amanhã.

I set this food aside for tomorrow's lunch.

Resolve a mix-up without blame

If a roommate used something you were saving, start by checking what happened. Explain what you understood and agree on a practical next step, such as replacing the item or labeling food more clearly.

A calm phrase such as acho que houve um engano (I think there was a mix-up) leaves room for a misunderstanding without accusing someone.

Acho que houve um engano: eu estava guardando esse iogurte.

I think there was a mix-up: I was saving that yogurt.

Podemos marcar o que é compartilhado?

Could we mark what is shared?

Put it into practice

Agree on shared staples, label personal food when useful, and ask before using an item that may belong to someone else.
