The short answer

Academia is the usual word for a gym in Brazil. Ask about matrícula (enrollment fee), mensalidade (monthly fee), and what is included before choosing a plan.

Ask what a membership includes

A short trial visit or tour may have its own terms. Ask the staff directly about access, cancellation, and class reservations rather than assuming each plan works the same way.

Quais planos vocês têm?

What membership plans do you offer?

A mensalidade inclui as aulas em grupo?

Does the monthly fee include group classes?

Preciso pagar matrícula?

Do I need to pay an enrollment fee?

Find a class, locker, or piece of equipment

Use onde fica…? to ask where something is, and tem aula de…? to ask whether a class is available. If you need someone to show you how to use a machine, ask for an explanation before starting.

In a busy gym, check whether equipment is being used before taking it. Pode revezar? asks whether you can alternate sets with the other person.

Onde ficam os armários?

Where are the lockers?

Tem aula de alongamento hoje à noite?

Is there a stretching class tonight?

Você ainda está usando este aparelho? Podemos revezar?

Are you still using this machine? Can we alternate?

Put it into practice

Ask about the membership terms, class schedule, and equipment before you begin. Academia means gym in Brazilian Portuguese.
