Portuguese for Networking: Introduce Yourself at an Event
Use a short introduction, one open question, and a clear way to exchange contact details.

The short answer
Start with your name and a short description of what you do. Trabalho com means I work with, and sou da área de means I’m in the field of.
Introduce yourself and your role
Keep the first introduction brief so the other person has room to respond. You can add the company or project name if it helps explain your work.
Oi, eu sou a Morgan. Trabalho com design de produto.
Hi, I’m Morgan. I work in product design.
Sou da área de tecnologia.
I work in technology.
Estou aqui para conhecer pessoas da área.
I’m here to meet people in the field.
Ask a question that opens the conversation
Ask what brought the person to the event or what kind of work they do. These questions are more likely to invite a useful answer than a question that can be answered only with yes or no.
Listen for one detail you can ask about: a project, team, client group, or professional interest. You do not need to ask several questions in a row.
O que trouxe você a este evento?
What brought you to this event?
Em que tipo de projeto você trabalha?
What kind of projects do you work on?
Há quanto tempo você atua nessa área?
How long have you worked in this field?
Exchange details and close politely
If you want to stay in touch, ask whether the person would like to exchange contact information. Then say it was nice to meet them and mention the next step if you agreed on one.
For phrases in a job interview, see our separate guide to introducing yourself and discussing experience in Portuguese.
Quer trocar contato?
Would you like to exchange contact details?
Foi um prazer conhecer você.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
Vou te mandar uma mensagem amanhã.
I’ll send you a message tomorrow.
Put it into practice
Prepare a two-sentence introduction and two open questions about the event or the other person’s work.
