Real Life Portuguese · 7 min read · Updated October 14, 2026

The short answer

Use tem to say there is or there are in everyday Brazilian Portuguese. Add a place and a location phrase such as perto de casa (near home) or na esquina (on the corner).

Say what is near your home

A few accurate details make a neighborhood description more useful than a long list. Choose places you pass regularly.

Tem uma padaria perto de casa.

There’s a bakery near my home.

O mercado fica na esquina.

The market is on the corner.

Tem uma praça a duas quadras daqui.

There’s a square two blocks from here.

Describe what you like about the area

Use gosto de morar aqui (I like living here) and add a reason with porque. You can mention convenience, green space, or being close to friends without claiming everyone in the area shares the same experience.

Use é tranquilo (it is quiet/peaceful) or é movimentado (it is busy) to describe the atmosphere. These are impressions, so they can depend on the street and time of day.

Gosto daqui porque tudo fica perto.

I like it here because everything is nearby.

A região é movimentada durante o dia.

The area is busy during the day.

Tem bastante espaço para caminhar.

There is plenty of space to walk.

Give a simple direction to a nearby place

Use vire à direita, siga em frente, or fica ao lado de to help someone find a place. If the direction could be confusing, name a visible landmark and ask whether the person wants you to send the address.
