Portuguese at a Clothing Store: Sizes, Fit, and Trying Something On

Learn the phrases for finding a size, trying on clothes, and asking whether another fit or color is available.

The short answer

Tamanho means size. To ask whether a store has another size or color, use Tem…? (Do you have…?) or Você tem em outro tamanho? (Do you have it in another size?). Clothing labels and sizing systems can vary by brand, so checking the item is more useful than assuming a number will fit everywhere.

Ask for a size or another option

A common word for a fitting room is provador. You can ask where it is before carrying several items around the store.

Você tem esta camisa em outro tamanho?

Do you have this shirt in another size?

Tem em azul?

Do you have it in blue?

Onde fica o provador?

Where is the fitting room?

Describe how the clothes fit

Experimentar means to try on. After you try something, say Ficou apertado (It turned out tight) or Ficou largo (It turned out loose). Fica bem can mean that an item looks good on someone; serve bem focuses more on the fit or size.

Brazilian speakers may use different words in different regions and contexts. These phrases give you a clear way to say what you mean and ask for another option.

Posso experimentar esta jaqueta?

Can I try on this jacket?

A manga ficou comprida.

The sleeve turned out long.

Este tamanho me serve melhor.

This size fits me better.

Make your choice without pressure

If you want to keep looking, say Vou pensar um pouco (I’ll think about it) or Estou só olhando, obrigado/obrigada (I’m just browsing, thank you). If you decide to buy it, ask the price or whether you can pay by card.

If an item does not fit, a direct explanation helps the staff find an alternative: Gostei, mas preciso de um tamanho maior (I like it, but I need a larger size).

Gostei, mas preciso de um tamanho menor.

I like it, but I need a smaller size.

Vou pensar um pouco, obrigada.

I’ll think about it, thank you.

Quanto custa esta calça?

How much are these pants?

Put it into practice

Practice asking for another size, asking where the fitting room is, and describing one fit issue. Use a color or clothing item you might actually shop for.
