How to Email a University Professor in Brazilian Portuguese

Follow a simple email structure for contacting a professor about coursework, office hours, or a question you could not resolve in class.

The short answer

A useful subject helps the professor understand your message before opening it. Include the course or assignment and your reason for writing. Dúvida (question) by itself may be too vague.

Write a subject that explains the reason

Professor or Professora plus the person's name is a clear greeting. Titles and preferred forms of address vary, so follow the way the instructor introduces themself or signs messages.

Assunto: Dúvida sobre o trabalho de História do Brasil

Subject: Question about the Brazilian History assignment

Olá, professora Ana,

Hello, Professor Ana,

Introduce yourself and ask one focused question

Briefly say your name and which class you attend, especially if the professor teaches several groups. Explain what you have already checked, then ask one direct question. A short, organized email makes it easier to see what help you need.

Use estou com uma dúvida sobre… (I have a question about…) or poderia me orientar? (could you guide me?). For a meeting request, offer possible times instead of assuming the professor is available.

Sou Daniel, da turma de terça-feira à tarde.

I am Daniel, from the Tuesday afternoon class.

Poderia me orientar sobre a estrutura da resenha?

Could you guide me on the structure of the review?

Close politely and check before sending

Thank the professor and use a simple closing such as Obrigado pela atenção (thank you for your time) or Atenciosamente (sincerely). Before sending, check the recipient, attachment, and whether the course materials already answer your question.

If the reply gives you a next step, acknowledge it briefly. Clear and respectful writing matters more than trying to sound overly formal.

Obrigado pela atenção. Atenciosamente, Daniel

Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Daniel

Se for possível, posso conversar depois da aula?

If possible, could I talk with you after class?

Put it into practice

Use a specific subject, identify your course, ask one answerable question, and end with a brief thank-you.
