Talk About Where You Live in Portuguese: A Guide for Life Abroad

A few sentence frames can help you talk about your current home without translating an entire life story first.

The short answer

Moro em… is a useful frame for saying where you live. To mention a period that began in the past and continues now, use moro aqui há… (I have lived here for…). The preposition and article used with place names vary; learn the form used with your destination.

Say where you live and how long you have been there

Moro em Lisboa agora.

I live in Lisbon now.

Moro aqui há dois anos.

I’ve lived here for two years.

Estou morando em outra cidade este ano.

I’m living in another city this year.

Describe one part of everyday life

Share one detail about your routine rather than trying to compare two countries in sweeping terms. You could mention the commute, the weather, your neighborhood, a food you found, or a small habit that changed. This keeps the conversation personal and avoids turning one experience into a rule about a whole place.

O que eu mais gosto aqui é poder andar a pé.

What I like most here is being able to walk.

Ainda estou me acostumando com o clima.

I’m still getting used to the weather.

Talk about what you miss or want to explore

Sinto falta de… means “I miss…” and helps you share a person, food, or familiar routine that you miss. You can balance it with something you are curious about: Quero conhecer… (I want to visit/get to know…). These frames work for a short answer or a longer story.

  • Sinto falta da minha família. — I miss my family.
  • Sinto falta da comida de casa. — I miss home cooking.
  • Quero conhecer melhor o bairro. — I want to get to know the neighborhood better.
