The short answer
Basquete is basketball, and quadra is court. At a pickup game, introduce yourself and ask whether the group is accepting another player. The number of players and local rules can vary, so wait for the group to explain how they organize the game.
Ask whether you can join the game
Say how long you have played if the team is choosing players by experience. Keep it simple and give the organizer a chance to place you.
Posso entrar no próximo jogo?
Can I join the next game?
Vocês estão formando os times agora?
Are you forming the teams now?
Learn the team and position vocabulary
Time means team, jogador or jogadora means player, and posição means position. Ask where the group needs you rather than choosing a spot before you know how the players are rotating.
The group may use a winner-stays format, timed games, or another rotation. Ask how they decide who plays next and how substitutes enter.
Em qual posição vocês precisam de alguém?
Which position do you need someone for?
Como funciona a troca de jogadores?
How does the player rotation work?
Clarify the score and a call
Placar is the score. If you missed a point or a call, ask the group to explain it calmly. Local pickup rules can differ from a formal match, so confirm what this group agreed to follow.
Use a short phrase such as foi ponto? (was that a point?) or de quem é a bola? (whose ball is it?). Keep your tone friendly and move on once the players settle the call.
Qual é o placar?
What’s the score?
Foi ponto ou a bola saiu?
Was it a point, or did the ball go out?
Put it into practice
Ask before joining, confirm the team rotation, and learn the group’s current rules instead of assuming every pickup game works the same way.
