The short answer

Voltar para + place means ‘to return to’ that location: voltar para casa, voltar para o Brasil. The destination may be a place, group, or situation. In everyday speech, voltar pra is a common reduced form of voltar para.

Use voltar para to name a destination

With a specific place, include the article if Portuguese normally uses one: para o escritório, para a escola, para a praia. Casa often appears without an article when it means home.

Vou voltar para casa depois do jantar.

I’m going back home after dinner.

Ela voltou para o Brasil no ano passado.

She returned to Brazil last year.

A gente volta pra praia no domingo.

We’re going back to the beach on Sunday.

Use voltar a + infinitive to repeat an action

Voltar a + infinitive means ‘to do something again’ or ‘resume doing it.’ The second verb stays in the infinitive: voltar a estudar, voltar a trabalhar. This construction focuses on restarting an activity after a pause, rather than returning to a place.

Context makes the difference clear: voltar ao trabalho can mean returning to a workplace or routine; voltar a trabalhar means beginning to work again. Both describe a return, but the grammar points to a different focus.

Depois das férias, voltei a estudar português.

After vacation, I started studying Portuguese again.

Ele voltou a correr quando o joelho melhorou.

He started running again when his knee improved.

A internet voltou a funcionar.

The internet started working again.

Put it into practice

Voltar para + place means return to a destination. Voltar a + infinitive means resume or repeat an action. Look at the word after a/para to identify the pattern.
