The short answer

Viagem with g is a feminine noun meaning a trip, journey, or travel experience. It commonly follows a possessive or article: a viagem, minha viagem, viagens longas. Use it when the sentence names the event or experience of traveling.

Use viagem for a trip or journey

The related verb is viajar, written with j. The change in spelling between the noun and verb is a common Portuguese pattern, so the sentence role is the clearest clue.

A viagem para Salvador foi tranquila.

The trip to Salvador was smooth.

Minha próxima viagem será em julho.

My next trip will be in July.

Ela adora viagens de trem.

She loves train journeys.

Use viajem for the verb viajar

Viajem with j is a verb form of viajar. It appears in the present subjunctive after expressions of hope, request, or uncertainty, and in a direct command to vocês: espero que vocês viajem bem; viajem com cuidado.

Check whether the sentence is naming a trip or describing an action by people. If a subject performs the action of traveling, write the verb with j. If the word names the trip, use the noun with g.

Espero que vocês viajem com segurança.

I hope you travel safely.

Viajem cedo para evitar o trânsito.

Travel early to avoid traffic.

A viagem começa amanhã.

The trip starts tomorrow.

Put it into practice

Viagem is the noun ‘trip.’ Viajem is a form of viajar, used in subjunctive clauses or commands to vocês.
