The short answer

In standard Portuguese, assistir a can mean to watch a film, show, or event. Keep the preposition a when it introduces the thing watched: assistir a um filme.

Use assistir a for watching an event

In everyday speech, people may use assistir without the preposition in some contexts, but learners can begin with the standard pattern and recognize variation when listening.

Vamos assistir a um filme hoje?

Shall we watch a movie today?

Assisti ao jogo com meus amigos.

I watched the game with my friends.

Ela gosta de assistir a séries brasileiras.

She likes to watch Brazilian series.

Use ver for seeing or experiencing something

Ver commonly means to see or view something. It can also mean to go see a film or a person, especially in everyday plans: vou ver meus amigos (I’m going to see my friends).

The intended meaning depends on context. Look at the object and the situation instead of expecting a strict one-to-one translation from English.

Você viu aquela placa?

Did you see that sign?

Quero ver essa exposição.

I want to see that exhibition.

Vou ver minha irmã no fim de semana.

I’m going to see my sister this weekend.

Choose the verb for your sentence

If you mean following a screen or performance, assistir a is a safe standard choice. If you mean noticing something or meeting someone, ver is often natural.

Our article about talking about movies and series covers opinions and recommendations after you watch.

Você assistiu ao documentário?

Did you watch the documentary?

Não vi a mensagem ainda.

I haven’t seen the message yet.

A gente vai ver o show no sábado.

We’re going to see the concert on Saturday.

Put it into practice

Write one sentence about watching a program, one about noticing an object, and one about seeing a person. Use the context to choose the verb.
