The short answer

Tudo bem? is a common way to greet someone and ask how they are. Although the words can mean “everything okay?”, in a greeting it often works like “How are you?” The other person may answer briefly before returning the question.

Use tudo bem as a friendly greeting

Brazilian Portuguese greetings depend on the relationship, region, and setting. Tudo bem is flexible with friends, colleagues, and new acquaintances, but a warm tone and a greeting such as oi or bom dia help set the mood.

Oi, tudo bem?

Hi, how are you?

Bom dia! Tudo bem com você?

Good morning! How are you?

Olá, tudo bem por aí?

Hello, how are things over there?

Answer briefly and return the question

A common response is tudo bem, e você? (All good, and you?). You can also say tudo, tudo bem, or estou bem, depending on how you feel and how much detail you want to share. The exchange is often a polite opening, so a short answer is natural.

If you are not doing well, you can still answer honestly and gently: mais ou menos (so-so) or hoje estou um pouco cansado (I’m a little tired today). The other person may ask a follow-up, but you are not required to give a long explanation.

Tudo bem, e você?

I’m good, and you?

Tudo certo. Como você está?

All good. How are you?

Mais ou menos, mas vai melhorar.

So-so, but it will get better.

Notice when tudo bem checks agreement or permission

The same phrase can ask whether a plan, suggestion, or situation is okay. In this use, the listener is not simply answering a greeting; they are confirming that something works for them. Intonation and the preceding sentence make the difference clear.

A response such as tudo bem, pode ser means “That’s fine, that works.” If the suggestion does not work, explain briefly and offer another option. A friendly no can be clear without sounding harsh.

A gente pode se encontrar às seis. Tudo bem?

We can meet at six. Does that work?

Tudo bem, esse horário funciona para mim.

That’s fine; that time works for me.

Hoje não consigo, mas amanhã tudo bem.

I can’t today, but tomorrow works.

Keep a short greeting moving into conversation

After the greeting, add a real follow-up if you want a longer exchange: como foi seu fim de semana? (how was your weekend?) or você está indo para a aula? (are you going to class?). This gives both people something concrete to talk about.

Tudo certo. Como foi a viagem?

All good. How was the trip?

Estou bem, obrigado. E você?

I’m well, thank you. And you? (speaker: man)
