Trazer vs. Levar: Bring or Take in Brazilian Portuguese

Trazer usually views movement toward the speaker or a reference point; levar views movement away from that point. The scene determines the verb.

The short answer

Trazer and levar both describe taking something from one place to another, but the speaker’s perspective changes the choice. Trazer often views the movement toward the speaker or toward the place being discussed. Levar usually views it as carrying something away from the current or reference place.

Use the destination as your point of view

English bring and take are not a perfect shortcut because speakers may imagine the destination differently. Picture where the speaker is and where the object is going before choosing the verb.

Você pode trazer uma sobremesa para a festa?

Can you bring a dessert to the party?

Vou levar os documentos ao escritório amanhã.

I’ll take the documents to the office tomorrow.

Trouxe meu caderno para a aula.

I brought my notebook to class.

Practise with a shared destination

When someone invites you to a place, the host may ask you to trazer something to the gathering. From your own starting point, you may describe the same trip as levar that item to the host’s home. The reference point shifts with the speaker, so both verbs can describe the same real-world delivery from different viewpoints.

Traz um casaco; vai esfriar à noite.

Bring a jacket; it will get cold at night.

Levei meu irmão até a estação.

I took my brother to the station.

Put it into practice

Choose trazer when movement is toward the speaker’s reference point and levar when it is away from that point. Imagine the scene instead of translating bring and take mechanically.
