Tocar vs. Jogar in Portuguese: Play an Instrument or a Sport?

Portuguese does not use one verb for every English meaning of ‘play’: tocar and jogar each fit different activities.

The short answer

Tocar means to play a musical instrument: tocar violão (play the guitar), tocar piano (play piano), or tocar bateria (play drums). The instrument normally follows the verb directly, without an article when you speak generally about playing it.

Use tocar for a musical instrument

Tocar has other meanings too, including touching something and ringing a bell. Use the activity and object to identify which meaning is intended.

Meu irmão toca violão numa banda.

My brother plays guitar in a band.

Você sabe tocar piano?

Do you know how to play piano?

A campainha tocou quando eu estava cozinhando.

The doorbell rang while I was cooking.

Use jogar for sports and games

Jogar commonly describes playing a sport or game: jogar futebol (play soccer), jogar tênis (play tennis), or jogar cartas (play cards). In Brazil, many people also use praticar for participating in a sport, especially when focusing on the activity or training.

Some activities take other verbs: play music is tocar música; play a role can be fazer um papel; and play with a child can be brincar com a criança. Learn the verb with the activity rather than translating ‘play’ alone.

A gente joga vôlei na praia aos sábados.

We play volleyball at the beach on Saturdays.

Eles gostam de jogar xadrez depois do almoço.

They like playing chess after lunch.

Ela pratica natação três vezes por semana.

She practices swimming three times a week.

Put it into practice

Use tocar for instruments and jogar for many sports and games. Other activities use verbs such as praticar, brincar, or fazer, so learn each activity as a phrase.
