Tô vs. Estou: Understanding a Common Spoken Shortcut
You may hear tô constantly in conversation. It is an informal spoken reduction of estou, not a different verb.

The short answer
In casual Brazilian speech, estou is often reduced to tô. The meaning stays the same; the shorter form simply reflects everyday pronunciation. You will hear it with estar forms such as tá for está and tão for estão.
Recognize tô as a spoken form of estou
These reductions appear in relaxed conversation, messages, music, and informal online writing. They help explain what you hear, but they do not replace the standard written forms in every context.
Tô chegando agora.
I’m arriving now.
Ela tá trabalhando.
She’s working.
A gente tá com fome.
We’re hungry.
Choose the form for the situation
Use estou, está, and estão in formal writing, school assignments, professional messages, and whenever you want the full standard form. In a relaxed conversation with friends, tô and tá usually sound natural. The right choice depends on audience and tone, not on one form being universally better.
Estou disponível para conversar às três.
I’m available to talk at three.
Tô livre mais tarde, quer tomar um café?
I’m free later; want to get coffee?
Listen for the whole phrase
When practicing listening, connect tô or tá to the words around it instead of trying to pronounce every vowel you see in writing. Notice who is doing the action and what follows: tô cansado, tá aberto, tão esperando.
- I / eu: estou in careful speech and writing; tô in casual speech.
- He, she, or an object: está or the informal tá.
- They: estão or the informal tão.
Put it into practice
Practice hearing both versions as the same verb in different registers. Choose the full form when you need a more careful tone.
