Ask About Weekend Plans in Portuguese and Keep the Conversation Going

Use one open question, a short reaction, and a follow-up to move beyond the first answer about weekend plans.

The short answer

O que você vai fazer no fim de semana? asks what someone is going to do this weekend. If the plans are not settled, the person may answer ainda não sei (I don’t know yet) or acho que vou ficar em casa (I think I’ll stay home). The near-future pattern ir + infinitive is common in conversation: vou visitar, vamos descansar.

Ask about plans without assuming the answer

A lighter opening is Você tem planos para sábado? (Do you have plans for Saturday?). It does not assume that the person has an activity arranged, and it can lead to a suggestion if both people are interested.

Você tem planos para domingo?

Do you have plans for Sunday?

Vou visitar uns amigos no sábado.

I’m going to visit some friends on Saturday.

Ainda não decidi o que vou fazer.

I haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet.

React to one detail and ask a connected question

A short reaction such as Que legal! (That’s great!) or Ah, entendi (Oh, I see) shows you are listening. Then choose one follow-up based on the answer: ask where the event is, how the person knows the place, or what they recommend doing there.

If you want to invite the person, be specific about the activity or time. If you are only making conversation, keep it as a question and let the person decide how much to share. Plans are personal, so avoid assuming everyone spends weekends the same way.

Que legal! Onde vai ser o show?

That’s great! Where will the concert be?

Você já conhece aquele lugar?

Do you already know that place?

Se você estiver livre, quer tomar um café no sábado?

If you’re free, would you like to get coffee on Saturday?

Put it into practice

Ask an open question about plans, respond to one detail, and choose a follow-up that connects to what the person said. Use specific invitations when you want to make a plan.
