How to Talk About Movies and Series in Brazilian Portuguese
Use practical phrases for streaming, genres, episodes, and spoiler-free recommendations in a conversation about what to watch.

The short answer
Filme means film or movie, série means series, and episódio means episode. Ask O que você está assistindo? (What are you watching?) or Você tem visto alguma série boa? (Have you been watching any good series?). The second question invites a recent recommendation instead of a list of everything the person has ever watched.
Ask what someone is watching
To name a genre, use filme de comédia (comedy), série policial (crime series), documentário (documentary), or ficção científica (science fiction). Genre labels help you narrow the conversation without needing a detailed plot summary.
Você está assistindo a alguma série no momento?
Are you watching any series at the moment?
Gosto de documentários sobre música.
I like documentaries about music.
Quantos episódios você já viu?
How many episodes have you watched so far?
Recommend something without giving away the plot
Use Eu recomendo… (I recommend…) and add one reason: os personagens são interessantes (the characters are interesting) or a história prende a atenção (the story keeps you engaged). Say sem spoiler when you want to make it clear you will not reveal a surprise. If the person asks what it is about, share the premise rather than the ending.
A recommendation is more useful when you mention what kind of viewer might enjoy it. You can say se você gosta de… (if you like…) and connect the title to a genre, setting, or tone.
Recomendo esse filme se você gosta de comédia leve.
I recommend this movie if you like light comedy.
Posso contar a premissa sem dar spoiler.
I can tell you the premise without giving away a spoiler.
A série é curta e tem personagens muito interessantes.
The series is short and has very interesting characters.
Share an opinion and invite the other person in
After someone gives a recommendation, respond with an opinion or ask a follow-up. You can say Parece interessante (That sounds interesting) or Não é muito meu estilo (It’s not really my style). A polite difference in taste can keep the conversation going when you ask what the person liked about it.

Parece interessante. O que você mais gostou?
That sounds interesting. What did you like most?
Ainda não vi, mas quero assistir no fim de semana.
I haven’t seen it yet, but I want to watch it this weekend.
Não é muito meu estilo. Você recomenda outra coisa?
It’s not really my style. Do you recommend anything else?
Put it into practice
Recommend one title using two details: the genre and one reason you enjoyed it. Leave out the ending and ask what the other person likes to watch.
