Brazilian Music in Portuguese: Ask About Samba, Forró, and MPB

Use approachable questions and genre names to discuss Brazilian music without treating the country’s diverse scenes as one sound.

The short answer

Música brasileira covers many styles and regional scenes. Samba, forró, sertanejo, funk, pagode, and MPB are useful names to recognize, but no list represents every Brazilian listener or every region.

Ask what someone likes to listen to

Use ouvir música for listening to music and gostar de for liking something. When asking about a genre, add the article naturally: Você gosta de samba? (Do you like samba?).

Que tipo de música você gosta de ouvir?

What kind of music do you like listening to?

Você conhece algum artista de forró?

Do you know any forró artists?

Eu gosto de samba, mas escuto vários estilos.

I like samba, but I listen to several styles.

Talk about a song, artist, or show

A song is uma música or uma canção; an artist is um artista or uma artista. To talk about live music, use show in Brazilian Portuguese for a concert or performance. Ask who is playing before you assume a genre from an event poster.

MPB stands for Música Popular Brasileira. It is a broad musical category, not a single rhythm. Let someone explain what they mean by a genre or artist and use follow-up questions to learn more.

Quem está tocando no show?

Who’s playing at the show?

Qual música você recomenda?

Which song do you recommend?

Nunca ouvi esse artista. Que estilo é esse?

I’ve never heard this artist. What style is that?

Put it into practice

Use open questions about what someone listens to, then ask about the artist or song. Brazilian music is diverse, so genre labels are a starting point for conversation rather than a complete description.
