The short answer
Só commonly means ‘only’ or ‘just.’ It can limit a person, quantity, time, or activity: só a Ana veio (only Ana came), só tenho dez minutos (I only have ten minutes), and vou só olhar (I’m just going to look). In speech, emphasis and the word’s position help listeners hear what is being limited.
Use só to limit a person, object, or action
Try placing só close to the phrase it limits. If the sentence could be understood in two ways, move só or choose apenas for a more explicit written phrasing.
Hoje só tenho uma reunião.
Today I only have one meeting.
Vou levar só uma mochila.
I’m going to take just one backpack.
Ela só trabalha de manhã.
She only works in the morning.
Use só or sozinho to describe being alone
Só can also describe a person who is alone, often in phrases such as estou só or fiquei só em casa. Sozinho/sozinha makes the meaning clearer and agrees with the person: ele está sozinho, elas estão sozinhas. The context distinguishes ‘alone’ from ‘only.’
When you mean ‘all by myself,’ sozinho often works naturally: viajei sozinho (I traveled alone). Use só before a number or noun when you mean ‘only one’ or ‘just that amount.’
Você vai ao show sozinho?
Are you going to the concert alone?
Hoje eu só quero descansar.
Today I just want to rest.
Tem só duas mesas disponíveis.
There are only two tables available.
Put it into practice
Só limits a person, thing, or action (‘only/just’); sozinho/a clearly describes someone being alone. Use position and context to make the intended limit clear.
