The short answer

English realize often means to become aware of or understand something. Portuguese realizar usually means to carry out, perform, or accomplish an action. For an idea that suddenly becomes clear, perceber is often the natural choice; notar works well when you mean to notice a detail.

Use perceber when an idea becomes clear

Realizar also appears in formal contexts such as realizar uma pesquisa (conduct research) or realizar um sonho (fulfil a dream). The surrounding noun helps show which sense is intended.

Percebi que tinha esquecido a carteira.

I realized I had forgotten my wallet.

Ela realizou o sonho de conhecer o Brasil.

She fulfilled her dream of visiting Brazil.

Notei uma diferença na pronúncia.

I noticed a difference in the pronunciation.

Choose the verb by the action in your sentence

Ask whether someone has become aware of something or has completed an activity. Perceber and notar fit awareness; realizar fits carrying out, conducting, or fulfilling. English “realize a plan” can mean making it happen, so realizar may be correct there even though the same verb is not the usual translation for “I realized the door was open.”

Só depois da conversa percebi o problema.

Only after the conversation did I realize the problem.

A equipe realizou uma pesquisa com os alunos.

The team conducted a survey with the students.

Put it into practice

Use perceber or notar for noticing and understanding; use realizar for carrying out or achieving. Let the action determine the verb.
