Quando vs. Enquanto: ‘When’ or ‘While’ in Portuguese?
Quando can locate an event in time; enquanto often frames two actions happening during the same period.

The short answer
Quando asks ‘when?’ and can introduce a time, a recurring moment, or a condition. It does not necessarily mean that two actions overlap; it simply connects the main event to its timing.
Use quando to say when an event happens
For an open future condition, Portuguese commonly uses the future subjunctive after quando: quando você chegar (when you arrive). This form is different from the present-tense routine in quando você chega (when you arrive / whenever you arrive).
Quando você chega do trabalho?
When do you get home from work?
Quando eu chegar, vou mandar uma mensagem.
When I arrive, I’ll send a message.
Me conta quando souber a resposta.
Tell me when you know the answer.
Use enquanto to frame overlapping actions
Enquanto means ‘while’ and often gives the time period during which another action happens. One action can be ongoing while a second action begins or continues.
A useful contrast is: quando eu cheguei, eles conversavam (when I arrived, they were talking) and enquanto eu esperava, eles conversavam (while I was waiting, they were talking). The second version foregrounds the overlap.
Pode ouvir música enquanto trabalha.
You can listen to music while you work.
Enquanto eu preparava o jantar, ela arrumava a mesa.
While I was making dinner, she set the table.
Vou revisar as anotações enquanto espero.
I’ll review my notes while I wait.
Put it into practice
Use quando to locate an event in time; use enquanto when you want to emphasize that two actions happen during the same period.
