The short answer
Um pouco often means a little or a bit and can soften a request or describe a small amount. In a request, pode falar um pouco mais devagar asks someone to speak a little more slowly.
Use um pouco for a small amount
Use de after um pouco before a noun: um pouco de água, um pouco de tempo.
Quero um pouco de café.
I’d like a little coffee.
Pode esperar um pouco?
Could you wait a little?
Entendo um pouco de português.
I understand a little Portuguese.
Use pouco to say not much or too little
Pouco can mean little, not much, or too little, depending on context. It can suggest that the amount is limited or insufficient, while um pouco often sounds more like a small amount.
When pouco describes a noun directly, its ending can agree in gender and number: pouca água, poucos dias, poucas opções.
Tenho pouco tempo hoje.
I have little time today.
Há poucas mesas disponíveis.
There are few tables available.
Ele fala pouco durante as reuniões.
He speaks little during meetings.
Use context to choose the tone
Compare tenho um pouco de dinheiro (I have a little money) with tenho pouco dinheiro (I have little money). The second often emphasizes that the amount is limited.
If you mean not enough, add não tenho o suficiente (I don’t have enough).
Tenho um pouco de tempo antes da aula.
I have a little time before class.
Tenho pouco tempo para terminar.
I have little time to finish.
Tenho um pouco de dinheiro, mas não o suficiente.
I have a little money, but not enough.
Put it into practice
Compare um pouco de with pouco before three nouns, and decide whether you mean a small amount or an amount that feels insufficient.
