The short answer
A voice message is commonly called áudio or mensagem de voz. In an informal chat, ask Posso te mandar um áudio? (Can I send you a voice message?). You can also tell the listener what the audio is about so they know whether they need to play it right away.
Ask before sending a longer audio message
Keep the message focused: greeting, main point, and one clear next step. If the person is busy, ask whether they prefer a text. The goal is to make communication easy, not to send an unnecessarily long recording.
Posso te mandar um áudio rápido?
Can I send you a quick voice message?
Vou explicar melhor por áudio.
I’ll explain more clearly in a voice message.
Você prefere áudio ou mensagem de texto?
Do you prefer a voice message or a text?
Reply when you listened or need more detail
You can say Ouvi seu áudio (I listened to your voice message) or Acabei de ouvir (I just listened). If you missed a detail, ask the person to repeat the time, name, or address. A clear question is more useful than pretending you understood a message you could not hear.
To ask for a written version, say Pode me mandar essa informação por texto? (Can you send me that information by text?). This is helpful for dates, numbers, and addresses that are easy to mishear.
Ouvi seu áudio agora. Obrigado por explicar.
I listened to your voice message now. Thanks for explaining. (speaker: man)
Não entendi o horário. Pode repetir?
I didn’t understand the time. Could you repeat it?
Pode escrever o endereço para mim?
Could you write the address for me?
Describe the message and check an important detail
When you refer to a specific point in an audio, mention the topic: No áudio, você falou sobre… (In the voice message, you talked about…). Then repeat what you understood and ask for confirmation. This repair strategy works well when the recording is long or the sound quality is poor.
Do not rely on an app label or playback indicator as proof that someone understood the content. If the detail matters, ask directly. You can use a short voice reply to confirm a simple plan and text to preserve exact numbers or addresses.
Você falou que a aula começa às sete, certo?
You said the class starts at seven, right?
A última parte do áudio ficou baixa.
The last part of the voice message was quiet.
Entendi que você chega amanhã de manhã.
I understood that you arrive tomorrow morning.
Practice a friendly voice-message exchange
Record a 10-second message inviting a friend to meet. Include the place and time, then listen back and check whether both are clear. Reply to your own message with one confirmation and one clarification question. This trains speaking and listening without needing a long conversation.

Oi! Vamos tomar um café às quatro na praça?
Hi! Shall we get coffee at four in the square?
Pode repetir o nome da praça?
Could you repeat the name of the square?
Perfeito, entendi. Até mais tarde!
Perfect, got it. See you later!
Put it into practice
Keep audio messages focused, confirm important details, and ask for a text when exact numbers or addresses matter.
