Portuguese Small Talk at a Party: Meet People and Keep Talking

Start with a friendly introduction and use an easy follow-up to keep a party conversation moving.

The short answer

Say oi or olá, give your name, and ask the other person’s name. If you are arriving with someone, introduce them too.

Join with a simple introduction

Use prazer (nice to meet you) as a short, friendly response. A relaxed introduction gives the conversation somewhere to begin.

Oi, eu sou a Alex. Qual é o seu nome?

Hi, I’m Alex. What’s your name?

Prazer em conhecer você.

Nice to meet you.

Como você conhece a anfitriã?

How do you know the host?

Ask about the event or shared context

A question about the host, neighborhood, music, or food gives the other person a topic they already know. Ask one question at a time and listen for a detail you can follow up on.

Avoid turning small talk into a list of questions. Share a short answer about yourself too, so the conversation feels balanced.

Você mora por aqui?

Do you live around here?

Você já conhecia esta música?

Did you know this song already?

O que você achou da comida?

What did you think of the food?

Move on or leave the conversation politely

If you want to introduce someone else or get a drink, close warmly before moving away. If you would like to talk again, say that you are glad to have met the person.

For questions designed specifically to keep a Portuguese conversation going, read our separate follow-up-question guide.

Vou pegar uma bebida. Quer alguma coisa?

I’m going to get a drink. Would you like anything?

Vou falar com outro pessoal agora.

I’m going to talk with some other people now.

Foi bom conversar com você.

It was nice talking with you.

Put it into practice

Prepare one introduction, one question about the event, and one polite way to move to another conversation.
