Portuguese–Spanish Cognates: How to Use Similar Words Safely

Cognates can speed up reading, but context and grammar tell you whether a familiar-looking Portuguese word means what you expect.

The short answer

Cognates are related words that share a form and a meaning. Examples such as família/familia, importante/importante, and informação/información can help Spanish speakers follow a Portuguese paragraph before they know every word.

Use reliable cognates to understand the main idea

Treat the resemblance as a reading clue. Portuguese pronunciation, accent marks, and sentence structure still differ, and recognizing one noun does not automatically reveal who did what.

A universidade oferece cursos de história.

The university offers history courses.

A informação importante está no início.

The important information is at the beginning.

A situação mudou rapidamente.

The situation changed quickly.

Compare common endings, then check the whole word

Many Portuguese words ending in -ção have related Spanish forms ending in -ción, such as informação/información and organização/organización. The spelling pattern can help you predict a word, but you still need to learn Portuguese pronunciation and gender with the noun.

Make a small family of examples and say each one aloud. This connects the written cognate to a sound pattern instead of leaving it as a silent translation exercise.

A organização do evento foi simples.

The organization of the event was simple.

A comunicação acontece por mensagem.

Communication happens by message.

A população usa vários idiomas.

The population uses several languages.

Separate true cognates from misleading look-alikes

A similar-looking word may have a different meaning, a narrower use, or a different everyday tone. Portuguese esquisito commonly means odd, while Spanish exquisito often describes something excellent or delicious. Portuguese apelido usually means nickname, whereas Spanish apellido means family name.

Do not build a rule from one pair alone. Write down the context in which the word appeared and check a reliable Portuguese example before you add it to your active vocabulary.

O sabor está ótimo; o prato está delicioso.

The flavour is great; the dish is delicious.

O filme ficou esquisito no final.

The film got strange at the end.

Qual é o seu sobrenome?

What is your family name?

Confirm meaning with grammar and context

When you meet a familiar word, identify its role in the sentence: noun, verb, adjective, or connector. Then check the neighboring words and the situation. A sentence with a clear subject and verb can correct a mistaken translation quickly.

Review a few useful sentences at a time. Mark a cognate as ready to use only after you can understand it in context and produce a Portuguese example without borrowing Spanish spelling or agreement.

Minha família chegou ontem.

My family arrived yesterday.

As informações estão atualizadas.

The information is up to date.

Eu ainda preciso confirmar o horário.

I still need to confirm the time.

Put it into practice

Let cognates make Portuguese more readable, then use context, pronunciation, and grammar to confirm each guess.
