Portuguese Adjective Placement: Before or After the Noun?
Most descriptive adjectives follow the noun, but some common pairs change nuance when the adjective moves.

The short answer
In many straightforward descriptions, the adjective follows the noun: uma casa bonita (a beautiful house), um livro interessante (an interesting book), and pessoas simpáticas (friendly people). The adjective still agrees with the noun in gender and number.
Start with the common noun-plus-adjective pattern
Some adjectives can appear before the noun for emphasis, style, or a familiar expression. Position is a useful clue, but context and the specific adjective matter.
Comprei uma mesa pequena.
I bought a small table.
Eles moram numa cidade tranquila.
They live in a quiet city.
Foi uma resposta clara.
It was a clear answer.
Notice when position changes the idea
A few common adjectives can take on a different nuance depending on their position. Um grande homem often praises someone as a great or admirable man, while um homem grande usually describes physical size. These are common tendencies, not a rule that every adjective follows.
Read the whole sentence and ask whether the adjective is identifying a quality, size, age, or an evaluative idea. If the meaning is important, make it explicit with another phrase.
Ela é uma velha amiga.
She is a longtime friend.
Ela encontrou uma amiga velha.
She met an old friend (advanced in age).
Foi um grande desafio.
It was a great challenge.
Learn fixed combinations in context
Some adjective-noun pairs are best learned as a phrase because the natural position is conventional. Record the complete expression, including its article and a short example sentence.
Color adjectives and regular agreement are covered in our separate Portuguese colors guide. Here, focus on the order and nuance of adjectives that describe size, age, or evaluation.
Ela teve uma ótima ideia.
She had a great idea.
Eles fizeram uma viagem longa.
They took a long trip.
Este é um bom exemplo.
This is a good example.
Put it into practice
Write three noun-adjective pairs, then move one adjective before the noun and check whether the meaning or emphasis changes in that expression.
