Por Que vs. Porque in Portuguese: How to Spell Each Form

Choose the spelling by checking whether you are asking for a reason, giving one, or using “the reason” as a noun.

The short answer

In a direct question, por que is written as two words: “Por que você está estudando português?” asks “Why are you studying Portuguese?” It can also appear in an indirect question: “Quero saber por que ela saiu” (I want to know why she left).

Use por que to ask “why” or say “for which reason”

A useful check is whether the phrase introduces a reason you are asking about. In standard spelling, this interrogative form remains separate even when the whole question ends in a different place.

Por que você chegou cedo?

Why did you arrive early?

Não entendi por que a loja fechou.

I didn’t understand why the store closed.

Por que caminho a gente vai?

Which route are we taking? (literally, by which route)

Use porque to give an explanation

Porque is one word when it introduces a cause or explanation, similar to “because.” It often answers a why question. Look at the relationship between the clauses: the second part tells you the reason for the first.

In fast conversation, porque may be unstressed and reduced in pronunciation, but its standard spelling is still one word in this explanatory use. Keep the written distinction clear while listening for the meaning of the whole sentence.

Cheguei cedo porque o ônibus passou rápido.

I arrived early because the bus came quickly.

Ela ficou em casa porque estava doente.

She stayed home because she was sick.

Não saímos porque começou a chover.

We didn’t go out because it started to rain.

Use por quê at the end and porquê as a noun

Por quê is used when the expression comes at the end of a question or before a pause: “Você saiu por quê?” (Why did you leave?). The accent marks the stressed form in this position.

Porquê is a masculine noun meaning “reason” or “why.” It commonly appears with an article or another determiner: “o porquê,” “um porquê.” This fourth form is less common in everyday learner conversations, but it appears in writing and helps complete the spelling system.

Você está rindo por quê?

Why are you laughing?

Quero entender o porquê da mudança.

I want to understand the reason for the change.

Ela explicou os porquês da decisão.

She explained the reasons for the decision.
