The short answer

Poder commonly expresses permission, possibility, or whether circumstances allow something. The exact reading comes from the situation: “Posso entrar?” can be a polite request for permission, while “Pode chover mais tarde” predicts that rain is possible.

Use poder for permission or possibility

Posso sentar aqui?

Can I sit here? / May I sit here?

Você pode me ajudar?

Can you help me?

A gente pode conversar amanhã.

We can talk tomorrow.

Use conseguir for ability or managing to do something

Conseguir often emphasizes being able to accomplish something, especially when there is an obstacle, effort, or result. It works well for describing whether you succeeded or managed to do an action.

Consegui terminar antes do almoço.

I managed to finish before lunch.

Você consegue ouvir o áudio?

Can you hear the audio?

Não consegui encontrar o endereço.

I couldn’t manage to find the address.

The sentence context makes the difference

When you ask “Você pode repetir?”, you are asking whether the person can or will repeat something. “Você consegue repetir essa frase?” focuses more on their ability to repeat it. Both can be natural; they simply emphasize different parts of the situation.

In the past, the contrast can be especially useful: “pude” says that it was possible or allowed; “consegui” commonly says that you managed to do it. Learn each one with a short sentence that shows the context.

  • Permission: Posso usar seu telefone? — May I use your phone?
  • Possibility: Pode fazer frio à noite. — It may be cold at night.
  • Ability or success: Consegui abrir a porta. — I managed to open the door.

Put it into practice

Try describing one thing you are allowed to do and one thing you managed to do today. The contrast will make the meanings easier to retrieve when you speak.
