The short answer

Perder a cabeça means to lose your temper, lose control of your reaction, or act impulsively. It is a figurative expression and can describe anger, panic, or a decision made before someone had time to think.

Use perder a cabeça for an impulsive or angry reaction

The phrase does not justify the action. A speaker can use it to acknowledge a reaction and then take responsibility for what they said or did.

Perdi a cabeça durante a discussão e falei sem pensar.

I lost my temper during the argument and spoke without thinking.

Ele perdeu a cabeça quando soube do atraso.

He lost his temper when he heard about the delay.

Respira um pouco antes de responder; não vale a pena perder a cabeça.

Take a breath before answering; it isn’t worth losing your temper.

Distinguish anger from simply being confused

Perder a cabeça is stronger than ficar nervoso (get nervous) or ficar confuso (become confused). It usually suggests that a person reacted without their usual control. If you only mean that you forgot something, esquecer is the direct verb.

Use the past tense perdeu or perdi for a completed reaction. In general advice, perder can stay in the infinitive after a phrase such as não quero (I don’t want to).

Fiquei nervoso antes da entrevista, mas consegui respirar com calma.

I got nervous before the interview, but I managed to breathe calmly.

Não quero perder a cabeça por causa de um comentário.

I don’t want to lose my temper over a comment.

Esqueci o nome do restaurante.

I forgot the name of the restaurant.

Put it into practice

Use perder a cabeça for a strong, uncontrolled reaction; choose ficar nervoso or esquecer when you mean ordinary anxiety or forgetting.
