The short answer

Notar often focuses on seeing, hearing, or becoming aware of a specific detail. It works well when you can name the visible or audible change you observed: a new haircut, a different sound, or a light that has turned off.

Use notar to point out an observed detail

The verb is useful in friendly conversation when you want to tell someone what caught your attention.

Notei que você cortou o cabelo.

I noticed that you cut your hair.

Você notou aquele barulho?

Did you notice that noise?

Não notei a placa na entrada.

I didn’t notice the sign at the entrance.

Use perceber for noticing or understanding a situation

Perceber can describe noticing something, but it also commonly means realizing or understanding a point. Context makes the sense clear: you can perceive that someone is tired, or realize that you left your keys at home.

When you want to say ‘I realized that…,’ perceber que is a useful pattern. When you want to identify one detail you saw or heard, notar que can feel more specific.

Percebi que tinha esquecido as chaves.

I realized that I had forgotten the keys.

Ela percebeu que eu estava preocupado.

She noticed that I was worried.

Só percebi o erro depois.

I only realized the mistake afterward.

Put it into practice

Use notar for a detail that catches your attention and perceber for noticing or understanding what is happening. The meanings overlap, so let the context guide your choice.
