Pelo Menos in Portuguese: Say “At Least” Naturally

Use pelo menos for a minimum amount or one thing that remains possible when the original plan changes.

Real Life Portuguese · 5 min read · Updated October 15, 2026

The short answer

Pelo menos commonly means at least. Put it before the number or condition that marks the minimum: pelo menos dez minutos (at least ten minutes).

Set a minimum amount

It does not guarantee that a minimum is enough for every situation. For a booking, deadline, or price, confirm current requirements with the responsible person or organization.

A caminhada leva pelo menos meia hora.

The walk takes at least half an hour.

Preciso de pelo menos dois dias para terminar.

I need at least two days to finish.

Name one acceptable fallback

Pelo menos can introduce a fallback when the first plan is unavailable. Depending on context and voice, it can sound practical, encouraging, or disappointed.

State the fallback after the phrase. In a request, make the action explicit rather than expecting pelo menos to do all the softening.

Se não der para almoçar juntos, pelo menos podemos tomar um café.

If we can’t have lunch together, at least we can have coffee.

Não consegui falar com ela, mas pelo menos deixei uma mensagem.

I couldn’t speak with her, but at least I left a message.

Narrow the scope of a statement

Pelo menos por enquanto means at least for now; pelo menos na minha experiência means at least in my experience. These phrases show the scope of a statement instead of making it sound universal.

Compare pelo menos cinco pessoas, a minimum count, with pelo menos eu tentei, where the speaker highlights one positive or defensible point. Intonation helps show the attitude.

Pelo menos por enquanto, vamos manter o mesmo horário.

At least for now, we’re going to keep the same time.

Pelo menos eu sei onde procurar a informação.

At least I know where to look for the information.

Put it into practice

Use pelo menos to state a minimum or a realistic fallback, then make the number or action explicit.
