The short answer

Parabéns is the everyday word for congratulations and is also the standard way to say happy birthday in Brazil. Say Feliz aniversário or simply Parabéns! Both are understood. The song sung at Brazilian birthday celebrations begins with Parabéns pra você, an informal spoken form of para você.

Use parabéns as the basic birthday greeting

A warm greeting can be short. Add the person’s name or a friendly emoji in a message, then include one personal wish. You do not need to translate a long English birthday message word for word.

Feliz aniversário, Ana!

Happy birthday, Ana!

Parabéns pelo seu dia!

Happy birthday / congratulations on your day!

Parabéns pra você!

Happy birthday to you! (informal pronunciation)

Add a wish for the year ahead

You can add desejo a você… (I wish you…) or espero que… (I hope that…). Common wishes mention health, happiness, achievements, and good moments. Keep the sentence sincere and appropriate to your relationship; a close friend may receive a more personal note than a work contact.

With espero que, a following verb often takes the subjunctive when expressing a wish. You can learn a complete greeting as a phrase before studying the grammar in detail: Espero que seu dia seja especial (I hope your day is special).

Desejo muita saúde e felicidade.

I wish you lots of health and happiness.

Espero que seu dia seja muito especial.

I hope your day is very special.

Que seu novo ano venha cheio de coisas boas!

May your new year be full of good things!

Reply when someone wishes you parabéns

If someone celebrates your birthday, say Obrigado or Obrigada (Thank you), matching the speaker’s gender in standard Portuguese. You can add Fiquei muito feliz com sua mensagem (Your message made me very happy) or Foi muito gentil da sua parte (That was very kind of you).

A short reply is enough in person or by text. For a group greeting, thank everyone together. The key is to respond warmly rather than searching for a complex phrase.

Muito obrigado pela mensagem!

Thank you very much for the message! (speaker: man)

Obrigada por lembrar de mim.

Thank you for remembering me. (speaker: woman)

Agradeço a todos pelo carinho.

I thank everyone for the kindness.

Write a birthday message that feels personal

Build a message with three parts: the greeting, one sincere wish, and a personal closing. Mention a shared memory or something you appreciate about the person if you know them well. For a colleague or new acquaintance, keep the message friendly and brief.

Parabéns, Lucas! Espero que você tenha um dia incrível. Um abraço!

Happy birthday, Lucas! I hope you have an amazing day. A hug!

Feliz aniversário! Que este ano traga muitas alegrias.

Happy birthday! May this year bring lots of joy.

Obrigada pela festa. Foi ótimo comemorar com vocês.

Thanks for the party. It was great celebrating with you all. (speaker: woman)
