Para Mim vs. Para Eu: Which Portuguese Pronoun Comes Next?

Use para mim when something is for you; use para eu before an infinitive when you are the person doing that action.

The short answer

Mim is an object pronoun used after a preposition. If something is intended for you, important to you, or easy for you, use para mim: este presente é para mim (this gift is for me). No verb follows that makes mim the person performing an action.

Use para mim when you are the recipient or viewpoint

The same pattern appears after other prepositions: de mim (of/from me), sem mim (without me), and entre mim e você (between you and me). After a preposition, Portuguese usually uses mim rather than the subject form eu.

Esse horário funciona para mim.

That time works for me.

Ela comprou um café para mim.

She bought a coffee for me.

Entre mim e você, prefiro a primeira opção.

Between you and me, I prefer the first option.

Use para eu when you will do the infinitive action

When eu is the subject of an infinitive, keep the subject form: para eu fazer (for me to do), para eu entender (for me to understand). The infinitive names your action, so eu is the person who performs it. The phrase is para eu + infinitive, not para mim + infinitive in careful standard usage.

This distinction is about the job the pronoun does, not about whether it comes after para. Ask yourself: ‘Who will do the verb?’ If the answer is ‘I,’ use eu as the subject.

Você pode repetir para eu anotar?

Could you repeat that so I can write it down?

Falta uma assinatura para eu enviar o formulário.

One signature is missing for me to send the form.

É difícil para mim, mas possível para você.

It’s difficult for me, but possible for you.

Put it into practice

Use para mim when you are the recipient or viewpoint. Use para eu + infinitive when you are the person who will perform that verb.
