The short answer

A pedido is an order you place for food or a product. The verb pedir means to ask for or order something. Use fazer um pedido when talking about making an order online or by phone.

Use pedido for a purchase or food order

Meu pedido ainda não chegou.

My order still hasn’t arrived.

Vou pedir um café e um pão de queijo.

I’m going to order a coffee and a cheese roll.

Use ordem for a command or sequence

Ordem can mean a command, an instruction, or the arrangement of things in sequence. Ordem alfabética means alphabetical order; dar uma ordem means to give an order or command.

Organize os nomes em ordem alfabética.

Arrange the names in alphabetical order.

O gerente deu uma ordem clara à equipe.

The manager gave the team a clear instruction.

Choose the noun by asking what kind of ‘order’ you mean

If someone is buying or requesting a product or meal, use pedido. If the sentence describes a command or how items are arranged, use ordem. The verb pedir often avoids the noun choice when you are simply ordering something.

Quero acompanhar o pedido pelo aplicativo.

I want to track the order in the app.

A lista está fora de ordem.

The list is out of order.

Put it into practice

Pedido is a placed order; ordem is a command or arrangement.
