A padaria can be more than a bakery. Practice a simple order from greeting to payment with flexible phrases.

The short answer
A padaria is a bakery and often serves coffee, snacks, and simple meals too. Start with Eu queria… (I’d like…) or Para mim… (For me…). To eat in, say para comer aqui; to take it away, say para viagem. The exact ordering process varies: you may order at the counter, a table, or both.
Choose what you want and say whether it is for here
Coffee names are useful to recognize. Café coado is filtered coffee, pingado is coffee with a little milk in many regions, and café com leite is coffee with milk. Ask what a local menu means if a term is unfamiliar.
Eu queria um pão na chapa e um café com leite, por favor.
I’d like toasted bread with butter and a coffee with milk, please.
É para comer aqui.
It’s to eat here.
O que vem neste sanduíche?
What comes in this sandwich?
Check the order and ask how to pay
When you are ready to pay, ask Pode trazer a conta? (Could you bring the bill?) or Quanto ficou? (How much did it come to?). Some places let you pay at the counter, so follow the staff’s instructions rather than assuming there is one system everywhere.
If the order is for more than one person, you can ask whether the payment can be separate: Pode dividir a conta? (Can you split the bill?). Before leaving, check whether you need to pick up an item or wait for it to be brought to your table.
Pode trazer a conta, por favor?
Could you bring the bill, please?
Aceita cartão por aproximação?
Do you accept contactless card payment?
Meu pedido sai no balcão?
Does my order come out at the counter?
Put it into practice
Order with Eu queria or Para mim, say whether you are eating in or taking it away, and ask how the café handles payment and pickup.
