The short answer
Né? is a common spoken contraction of não é? It often invites another person to confirm or share an observation: está quente hoje, né? (it’s hot today, isn’t it?). In English, the closest tag changes with the sentence, but Portuguese speakers can use né? across many different subjects and verb forms.
Use né? to invite confirmation or connection
The tag can also keep a conversation warm or give someone a chance to respond. It does not always mean the speaker is uncertain; tone and context show whether they genuinely ask for confirmation or simply connect with the listener.
Você mora perto daqui, né?
You live near here, right?
Foi uma viagem longa, né?
That was a long trip, wasn’t it?
A gente se vê amanhã, né?
We’ll see each other tomorrow, okay?
Let your intonation show whether you expect an answer
A rising tone can make né? sound like a direct check. A lighter, falling delivery may work more like a conversational marker. The same tag can be friendly, persuasive, or mildly challenging depending on the words around it, so do not use it mechanically in every sentence.
In formal writing, spell out não é? or ask a complete question instead. Né? is most at home in informal conversation, subtitles, and friendly messages.
Você entendeu a primeira parte, né?
You understood the first part, right?
Está tudo certo, não é?
Everything is okay, isn’t it?
Você poderia confirmar o horário?
Could you confirm the time?
Put it into practice
Né? is a flexible informal tag for checking agreement or keeping a conversation connected. Use intonation and context to judge whether it is a real question or a soft conversational prompt.
