The short answer

Mudar means to change or move. It can describe a change in plans, habits, opinions, or residence: mudar de cidade (move to another city), mudar de ideia (change your mind). The focus is that something becomes different or goes somewhere else.

Use mudar for a change or move

Use mudar + object when someone changes something: mudar o horário (change the time). Use mudar-se when you want to emphasize a person moving home, though Brazilian speakers also commonly say mudar de casa.

A empresa mudou o horário da reunião.

The company changed the meeting time.

Eles vão mudar de apartamento em dezembro.

They are moving to a different apartment in December.

Mudei de ideia depois da conversa.

I changed my mind after the conversation.

Use trocar for an exchange or replacement

Trocar often means exchange, trade, or replace one thing with another. The sentence may name both items with por: trocar café por chá (switch coffee for tea). It is also common for changing clothes, exchanging a product, or switching seats.

The verbs overlap in phrases about changing something, but trocar highlights the replacement or exchange. Mudar highlights the change itself. Learn expressions such as trocar de roupa and mudar de cidade as complete units.

Vou trocar de roupa antes do jantar.

I’m going to change clothes before dinner.

Posso trocar este tamanho por um maior?

Can I exchange this size for a larger one?

Ela trocou o turno com uma colega.

She swapped shifts with a colleague.
