The short answer
Mandar and enviar can both mean to send a message, photo, document, or package. Mandar is very common in casual Brazilian Portuguese, while enviar can sound a little more neutral or formal in a written instruction. The choice often depends on the speaker and the situation.
Use both verbs for messages and items you send
With either verb, name what is being sent and to whom when the detail matters.
Vou mandar uma mensagem para a Júlia.
I’m going to send Júlia a message.
Pode enviar o documento por e-mail?
Can you send the document by email?
Ele me mandou uma foto da viagem.
He sent me a photo from the trip.
Notice when mandar means to tell or have someone do something
Mandar also appears in a different pattern: mandar alguém fazer alguma coisa means to tell or order someone to do something. This is not the same as sending a person to a destination, so pay attention to the verb that follows.
Enviar alguém para outro local focuses on sending or dispatching them; mandar alguém fazer algo expresses an instruction and can sound forceful. Use pedir (ask) instead when you want a polite request.
O gerente mandou a equipe esperar.
The manager told the team to wait.
A professora pediu para eu ler o texto.
The teacher asked me to read the text.
Vou enviar o pacote amanhã.
I’m going to send the package tomorrow.
Put it into practice
For sending a message or package, mandar and enviar often overlap. In mandar alguém fazer algo, mandar means to instruct someone to do it.
