The short answer

Saída means exit, saída de emergência means emergency exit, escada means stairs, and elevador means elevator. In an evacuation, follow posted instructions and directions from emergency personnel rather than searching for a translation online.

Recognize signs and directions

This vocabulary lesson does not replace the safety plan or official instructions for the building you are in.

A saída de emergência fica à esquerda.

The emergency exit is on the left.

Use a escada e siga as instruções.

Use the stairs and follow the instructions.

Ask a short question if you are unsure

If you cannot identify the route, ask where to go or which exit to use. Keep the question short and repeat the place or floor you are asking about.

In a dangerous situation, prioritize the instructions of staff and responders. Do not go back into an unsafe area to retrieve belongings.

Por onde devemos sair?

Which way should we leave?

Esta escada leva à saída?

Does this staircase lead to the exit?

Report an access problem clearly

If an exit is blocked or someone cannot use the route, tell staff or responders what you observe and where it is. Use the floor number, room name, or nearby landmark inside the building.

Keep your message focused on the location and immediate problem. Follow guidance from people responsible for the evacuation.

A porta está bloqueada no segundo andar.

The door is blocked on the second floor.

Há uma pessoa que precisa de ajuda para sair.

There is someone who needs help getting out.

Put it into practice

Learn the signs saída de emergência and escada, then follow the building's official evacuation instructions.
