The short answer
Parecer means to seem or appear. It presents an impression: a rua parece tranquila (the street seems quiet). It does not confirm that the impression is a permanent fact.
Use parecer to describe how something seems
Use parece que before a full idea: parece que vai chover (it looks like it will rain). For a person, parece cansado describes how someone seems rather than stating exactly how they feel.
Esse restaurante parece bem movimentado.
That restaurant looks very busy.
Parece que o ônibus está atrasado.
It looks like the bus is late.
Use ficar to describe a resulting state
Ficar often connects a change or event with the state that follows. A comida ficou pronta means the food became ready or is now ready. With a person, fiquei animado can mean I became or felt excited.
Ficar also means to stay or be located in other patterns, so use surrounding words to choose the translation.
A sala ficou silenciosa depois da reunião.
The room became quiet after the meeting.
Fiquei mais tranquilo quando recebi a confirmação.
I felt calmer when I received the confirmation.
Compare an impression with what happened
Parecer describes your reading of a situation; ficar describes a resulting state. O plano parece complicado means it seems complicated; o plano ficou complicado depois da mudança means it became complicated after the change.
Parece can soften an observation, while ficou can explain a change. The context, not either verb alone, tells you whether a state is temporary or lasting.
Você parece cansada. Quer fazer uma pausa?
You seem tired. Would you like to take a break?
A gente ficou contente com a notícia.
We were pleased with the news.
Put it into practice
